More notably, though, what was once a tunnel shooter has been tweaked once again, with more open environments to explore now – which make the most of the graphical fidelity on offer, as well as the processing power – and a handy array of new abilities for your travels.Īlongside the usual futuristic firearms, Shadow Marshalls now have the power to see through walls (another nod to The Last of Us, though at least this time it makes sort of technical sense) and slow down time for brief periods, as well as harness a personal drone called The Owl like a bird of prey. Gamers wrapped up in the franchise's mythology may well get a kick off the in-universe referencing and political allegories, but we have to admit we've become lost and bogged down in a murky back story that never seems to transmit its intergalactic Second World War into much emotional heft it's at least balanced. Players take on the role of Lucas Kellen, a Shadow Marshall (that's an elite black ops agent of the future, y'all) who is tasked with keeping the familiarly fire-eyed Nazi-tinged forces of Helghast in check as the ongoing war between them and the Vektans (that's your lot) intensifies.ĭavid Estes of Homeland fame voices the surrogate father and military superior Sinclair, giving you authoritative updates in what equate to a series of rather elongated, po-faced search and destroy missions around intergalactic substitutes for real-world wars. Killzone Shadow Fall: PlotĪfter what we'll politely call a homage to The Last of Us's opening, in which our immediate story expectations may be subverted but it feels so familiar it's lost its punch, the latest Killzone thrusts us quickly into the future and a familiar role of skilled gunman (skilled, at least, in the cut scenes) waiting for despatch. If Knack is the family crowd-pleaser, Resogun manna for the retro-arcade crowd and Contrast the quirky art-house effort for the indie fraternity, Killzone: Shadow Fall is for those who live and breathe head shots. Known for being dark, dingy and hard as hell, it makes for a stridently uncompromising introduction into Sony's next-gen console. If Halo comparisons may have hobbled it slightly, it's certainly carved out its own niche among the PlayStation die-hards. This is a new technique, and can't be described using terms applied to previous methods.Guerrilla Games' Killzone franchise of first-person shooters have become the hardcore flagpole for Sony-friendly gun fans, spanning six entries in a carnage-heavy series sometimes subtitled 'Nazis in space'. Shadow Fall is not using any kind of interlacing, vertical or horizontal. It's best that we call it something else.Īll that is incorrect. It's a very different method than interlacing, with much better results. On progressive displays interlacing can only be a render-saving method if it's either upscaled or half framerate HSTRAA saves render time without either of those effects.Īnd probably more that don't occur to me. Interlacing produces comb artifacts on any object in motion HSTRAA on only some. Interlacing can be applied to any video stream, including those already recorded HSTRAA can only be used by a 3D rendering engine at runtime. But this is a very superficial similarity to interlacing, and calling it that is both inaccurate and far more confusing than helpful. Guerrilla's "half-sample temporal reprojection analytic AA" (let's call it HSTRAA for short) does different work on alternating columns of pixels. Despite this, the final image still has much higher IQ than an equivalent upscale or interlace.Ĭlick to expand. The old terminology of "odd and even fields" (not frames) and "interlacing" were established to describe a very specific method of generating a video stream. (In other cases it can.) The drawback is artifacts-manifested as blurred textures or motion ghosts-when the approximation fails. It requires data only used within 3D rendering engines, and therefore couldn't (for example) make existing Youtube videos look better at higher resolutions.īecause it uses this extra data, it gives much better results than interlacing or upscaling-so much better, that in certain cases pixel counting can't detect the native rendering resolution. In distinction, the Shadow Fall method cannot be used on a video stream. Interlacing and upscaling have particular meanings, and refer to methods of using pixels of an undersized video stream to fill in display pixels on the same or subsequent frames. This is a new technique, and can't be described using terms applied to previous methods.

My Southern gardening friends would say that thyme has a tendency to “melt out,” an apt description of humidity’s effect. Damage appears as tattered foliage and naked branches. In fact, dry conditions improve plant vigor, and poor soil increases aromatic oil production, making thymes more fragrant. Watering and fertilization are rarely necessary once plants have become established. Most thymes prefer full sun, although a few golden or variegated cultivars, along with woolly thyme and T. In areas with high rainfall, planting thymes on rocky slopes helps alleviate drainage problems, but it is also important to select the right cultivar for your conditions. A top dressing or mulch of sand or gravel helps to thwart frost-heaving of the plants in winter and diverts water away from the stems and leaves. When planting, I add sand or gravel to the soil to improve drainage. Too much water and heavy soil cause thymes to rot. Native to the Mediterranean region, thymes prefer dry conditions and average garden soil. Good drainage encourages a vigorous carpet of thyme When underplanting deciduous shrubs with thyme, I always remove any fallen debris to prevent the thyme from rotting under damp leaves. The spiky texture and silver-blue color of the spruce are complemented by the soft, neat mounds of thyme. In my garden, a flat-topped, dwarf blue spruce is paired with a low, white-flowering thyme, T. I allow the thyme to spread around the base of the taller specimens if the thyme starts to creep up and into the shrubs, I just clip it back. In another part of my border, a creeping thyme flows around some dwarf iris and ‘Moonshine’ yarrow, creating a composition of wildly different foliage textures.ĭwarf conifers and woody shrubs underplanted with thyme are less often seen but quite lovely. The allium pokes up through the low, glossy mat of thyme and among the fuzzy betony leaves, where its whiplike foliage contrasts nicely. I like to grow the betony and drumstick allium underplanted with a creeping thyme. Perennials such as betony, bee balm, sage, allium, pincushion flower, artemisia, yarrow, and iris make interesting companions. Thymes blend well with other plants, too. It tolerates the shady conditions but is far less vigorous than other thymes grown in sunny locations. pseudolanuginosus, a woolly thyme with soft, fuzzy, gray foliage. Along north-facing, railroad-tie steps, I grow T. Slopes and inclines in my garden feature ‘Pink Chintz’, ‘Bressingham Seedling’, ‘E. Many will meander down crevices, cascade over boulders, or form tight, sculptural mounds. Thymes are always at home in rock gardens, walls, and on rocky slopes. Under caraway thyme ( Thymus herba-barona ‘Minus’ and ‘Longwood’), I plant summer-flowering bulbs like alliums, lilies, and spider lilies, which grow happily without being smothered by the thymes. Because they are resilient, I walk on the mats to weed, deadhead, and complete other maintenance tasks. Their fuzzy, gray foliage makes an attractive carpet creeping over a dark-stained railroad tie.Ĭreeping thymes enliven the transition from pathways to perennial beds, where they spread into my wide borders. I especially enjoy the prostrate varieties planted among paving stones in paths and terraces that spill into my perennial borders. They are separated into two groups: prostrate, which grow less than 3 inches high and resemble lush, sun-loving mosses and mounding, which form undulating, green or silver carpets that are more than 3 inches high. My favorites are the creeping thyme cultivars, which present a wealth of choices for unusual, aromatic ground covers. Most are hardy to Zone 5 (–20☏) with winter protection. More than 150 thymes are commercially available, with hardiness ranges from USDA Hardiness Zones 2 (–50☏) to 10 (30☏). For the consumer, that should mean faster downloads - three times faster than the Galaxy S4, according to Samsung. Without getting too technical, it’s a wireless technology that allows the device to transfer more data at the same time. I know what you’re thinking: What the heck does that mean? The Galaxy S5 will be the first smartphone to introduce 802.11ac Wi-Fi with 2X2 MIMO (which stands for multiple-input and multiple-output). I love posting photos to Instagram and Facebook, and the Galaxy S5 brings some fun options in a simplified experience. I have to say the enhancements to the camera might be my favorite part of the Galaxy S5 (that and the cleaned up interface). To simplify the interface, Samsung has consolidated a lot of its photo editing features, such as eraser, drama shot and best face, into a single function called Shots & More. The Galaxy S5 also does HDR video, as well as 4K video. This is a timesaver compared to how it works on smartphones today, where the camera takes two photos (one with and one without HDR) and then you have to choose after the fact. With this function, you can toggle HDR on and off before taking a photo to see which one yields the better photo. Another addition is Selective Focus, which keeps the subject in focus while blurring the background if you desire such an effect.Īlso new to the Galaxy S5 is real-time HDR. Samsung said a typical smartphone camera takes anywhere between 0.6 seconds and one second to focus, but the Galaxy S5’s camera now does so in 0.3 seconds, thanks to a new face detection autofocus feature. This includes reducing the time it takes the camera to autofocus, so you don’t miss any shots. But more than the pixel count, the company has focused on improving performance and simplifying the user experience of the camera app. The Galaxy S5 now has a 16-megapixel camera compared to the Galaxy S4’s 13-megapixel camera. But whether they like to admit it or not, Google also had a part in it after the search giant pressured Samsung to scale back some of its homegrown efforts to customize its Android devices. Samsung told me that this was at the request of its customers, which I can believe because I hate bloatware (the company is also working with carriers to reduce the number of installed apps). The only Samsung services that come preloaded on the Galaxy S5 are ChatOn, S Health, S Voice and Samsung apps. For example, Samsung Hub is no longer on the phone, though you can still download it from the app store. On the user interface side, Samsung has cleaned up the Galaxy S5 a lot by removing many of its proprietary apps and services. The screen’s outdoor visibility has also been improved on the Galaxy S5. That said, it now incorporates technology that can adapt the colors on the screen to be more representative of what we see in real life depending on the subject. The Galaxy S5’s display is slightly bigger at 5.1 inches (versus five inches), but the resolution is still full HD (1,920 by 1,080 pixels) and not ultra HD (2,560 by 1,440 pixels). Also, the Galaxy S5 is now dust and water resistant. The texture is similar to the faux leather used on the Galaxy Note 3. Glam isn’t exactly the word I’d use, but it does make the phone feel less plasticky. Samsung did try to “glam” it up by adding a perforated pattern to the back cover and offering the phone in electric blue and copper gold, in addition to black and white. In general, the Galaxy S5 looks similar to previous models and is made from polycarbonate plastic. Here’s a breakdown of what’s new in each category: Design We’re going back to basics.”Īs a result, the company chose to make improvements in five key areas based on customer feedback: The design, camera, network, health and fitness, and security. But at the same time, we realized how important it is to listen to our customers. “Of course, we are keen on preparing for the next big thing with very disruptive innovation. They weren’t looking for the eye-popping, disruptive technology that everybody else was looking for,” said Young-Hee Lee, executive vice president of Samsung’s mobile division, in an interview with Re/code. “We learned from our Galaxy S users that they really want basic, everyday life features. But truth is, the company kept it relatively simple. Another rumor said it would have an Ultra HD display, while others speculated that there would be multiple models. In fact, before today’s Unpacked event, there was talk that the Galaxy S5 would have an iris scanner to unlock the phone. Given Samsung’s eagerness to get a leg up on the competition, you can’t blame a gal (or guy) for thinking that the company would pull out all the stops for its next-generation Galaxy S phone. But what was unexpected was the company’s approach in designing its latest flagship Android phone. As expected, Samsung today introduced the Galaxy S5 at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.
This can affect the calculated length of pregnancy. However, adding 9 months is also problematic, as not all months have the same number of days. Naegele’s rule was therefore interpreted differently by physicians until the beginning of the 20th century, when American medical books specified that the 7 days should be counted from the first day of your last period. However, the rule doesn’t specify whether to start on the first or last day of your period. This method was developed by a Dutch physician in 1744.Īccording to the original rule, you must count 7 days from your last menstrual period and add 9 months to calculate your due date. In the past, most doctors and midwives used Naegele’s rule to calculate a woman’s expected date of delivery. By then, it’s usually safer to induce labour than to wait. Doctors will usually offer to induce labour between weeks 41 and 42. In theory, however, no pregnancy will exceed 42 weeks and 6 days (300 days). Some women may also have a longer pregnancy: the same study revealed that about 25 percent of women having their first baby give birth after 41 weeks and 2 days (289 days). For a second pregnancy, delivery usually occurs around 40 weeks and 3 days. About 50 percent of first-time moms give birth after 40 weeks and 5 days (285 days). However, some studies now suggest that a normal pregnancy may actually last a little longer. Specialists estimate that a pregnancy generally lasts 40 weeks (280 days). How reliable is the estimated delivery date?Īfter a positive pregnancy test, the question on many women’s minds is: what’s my date of delivery? Determining a specific date, however, is more complicated than you might think. How do I calculate my due date? Determining a specific date is more difficult than you might think.
